For a long time I’ve got this success and failure thing wrong. Too often I’ve confused success and failure with winning or losing. In reality success is about learning. Success is having something you didn’t have before which has been acquired through achievement. Learning is about surmounting a deficit of ignorance. If you learn then you are successful.
Potentially if you win or lose you are a success. Potentially if you win or lose you are a failure. To continually lose in the same way is being unsuccessful because nothing has been learned. If one loses in new ways but in ways that were less ‘lossy’ than previous losses then one has learned. If one wins without learning, then one is unsuccessful. It really is just a ‘fluke.’ To win and to learn requires modesty; to lose and to learn requires not falling into despair.
Therefore the key in life is reflection. After you have competed, reflect. Then analyse. Then practise. This is learning. This is success.
